Now, I’ve spent my life looking out for the folks in my corner of the world, and you don’t keep a place strong by letting it all drift away. Over in Europe, they’re holding fast to what’s theirs—keeping their own crowd, their own way of living, right where it belongs. Out here in Bonavista—Burin—Trinity, we know what it’s like to fight for our fishery, our traditions. Them Europeans, they’re just saying, “This is who we are, and we’re not budging.” There’s something to admire in that—standing up for your own, keeping the heart of your home beating strong. It’s like tending to your nets, b’y; you don’t let ‘em get tangled with every passing tide. Europe’s got its own way, and maybe we could learn a thing or two from that kind of backbone.
